Hamilton advises residents of possible data breach linked to water meter services

First Published:

The City of Hamilton says a third-party mailing vender, used by the water meter maintenance company Hamilton Water contracts from, has been subject to a ransomware attack.

Neptune Technology Group, who handles replacement and maintenance of residential and commercial water meters, informed the city that 2,387 accounts may have been subject to the attack.

Names and mailing addresses may have been compromised as a result.

Neptune Technology Group has stopped using and sharing information with the mailing vendor as a precautionary measure until further notice.

The mailing vendor has also hired a consultant to investigate the attack.

Hamilton Water considers this as a low-risk incident for residents.

The City says residents can take precautionary measures to safeguard their information by reviewing account statements and monitoring credit reports for suspicious activity.

Residents with questions or concerns can request to speak with Hamilton Water by contacting 905-546-CITY (2424).
