There are calls to re-evaluate road safety in the York Street and James Street area.

Police say a cyclist has died after being struck by a cement truck in downtown Hamilton Thursday afternoon.

Officers say a male cyclist was heading eastbound on York Boulevard approaching James Street North when he was hit by a cement truck that was turning right onto James Street from York Boulevard.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Police and the coroner’s office are working to identify the cyclist as he did not have identification on him at the time of the crash.

Officers say the driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The intersection remained closed for several hours as the collision reconstruction unit continued to investigate, but it has since re-opened.

This marks the city’s 11th fatality of the year and the first involving a cyclist.
