Crews battle ‘stubborn fire’ on Hamilton Mountain, damage in the millions

First Published:

Hamilton firefighters continue to battle an overnight fire at an industrial building on Hamilton Mountain.

Crews were called to 225 Nebo Rd. near Hempstead Dr. shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Friday.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says a cleaning crew working inside a poultry processing plant contacted 911 after they spotted the fire.

“It’s a pretty stubborn fire in the freezer area,” said Cunliffe. “Crews worked diligently to open up the walls to gain access to the fire. We’ve got large piles of packaging material that are burning on racking.”

He said the fire was upgraded to a multiple-alarm and additional resources were brought in to assist.

Cunliffe said firefighters utilized drone technology to provide a heat signature that let crews know where the fire was inside the building.

The drone was also equipped with a spotlight that helped light the area for firefighters who were stationed on the roof.

Cunliffe says crews will be on scene for several hours dealing with the deep-seated fire.

No injuries have been reported.

Damage is estimated to be in the millions of dollars.

Hamilton police say Nebo Rd. is currently closed between Hempstead Dr. and Lancing Dr.
