Welland Canal marks 200th anniversary
Two centuries later, the Welland Canal continues to stand the test of time.
Members of the community gathered at Allenburg Bridge in Thorold to honor its creation.
Ann O’Hare, the chair of the Thorold Heritage Committee, says this engineering achievement plays a crucial role in international shipping. A plaque was unveiled to mark the historical occasion.
The Welland Canal was first conceived by three businessmen: William Hamilton Merritt, George Keefer, and John “Dasoo.”
Darcy Wilson with the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation says that today, their legacy lives on.
Among those in attendance were local politicians. They say it was important for them to come out and show their support.
