Violence at Hamilton high schools involving bear spray leads to charges

Hamilton police have laid several charges following incidents of violence at local high schools involving bear spray.
Officers say tensions between several high schools in the city had been increasing over the past few weeks, which lead to incidents of physical violence.
First responders were called to the area of Upper Sherman and Rymal Road Nov. 25, after physical violence had erupted involving students from Nora Henderson High School.
Police say bear spray was discharged during a fight, and some people in attendance was injured.
Investigators charged one adult with assault level one, a youth was diverted for assault with a weapon, and four other youths were diverted for assault level one.
A student at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary was charged Dec. 2, after they were allegedly found to be releasing a can of bear spray into a school drain, causing mischief to the property.
The student now faces charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief to property.
Police say a fight broke out Dec. 3, at the Ancaster Community Centre at 385 Jerseyville Road.
They say it involved a large gathering of students from Ancaster High School, Bishop Tonnos Secondary School and St. Thomas More Catholic High School.
Officers say some of the students used bear spray during the fight.
Investigators charged one youth with possession of a prohibited weapon and assault with a weapon, while three other youths were diverted for possessing a prohibited weapon.
The police department says the accused parties in each incident have also been suspended by their respective schools.
Hamilton Police reminds residents that according to the Criminal Code any spray is a weapon if it is used in a way to administer a noxious substance upon someone.
