U.S. government hitting Canada, 60+ nations with forced labour tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration says it will be hitting Canada and dozens of other countries with tariffs, pointing to forced labour in supply chains.

The office for the U.S. trade representative announced the new duties on more than 60 nations today. The move comes just hours before Trump’s previous tariff tool was set to expire.

Along with Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom will be hit with a 10 per cent tariff. Other nations will be seeing a 12.5 per cent levy.

There’s no word yet on if there will be an exemption for goods compliant under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement.

Earlier this year the federal government tabled legislation that would – in their words – respect the prohibition of the importation of goods produced by forced labour.
