President-elect Donald Trump spent Christmas Day thinking about Canada when he suggested to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky after a visit that he should run for national office.
The two spent some of the holiday together and Trump later posted on social media that he said to the sports star: “Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.”
Trump said that he thinks it would be “fun to watch” if Canadians got the Brantford-born Gretzky to run for office, though he added that “The Great One” had no interest in the idea.
This comment is the latest in a series of online jabs the past month about Trump “taking over” — and his plans for — Canada. Even of one of Trump’s sons joked this week about his father purchasing Canada.

The president-elect has talked about Canada becoming “the 51st state” and has made multiple references to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau.”
This all began after Trump announced to the world on Nov. 25 that he would introduce tariffs on all products coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico once he takes office late January.
The Canadian Press reported that it has tried to contact Gretzky through his agents. There is no word yet on any comments from ‘Number 99.’
