Canada’s chief public health officer says education is necessary heading into 2025 with bird flu on the radar as an emerging virus.

Dr. Theresa Tam says the H5N1 bird flu is of concern with Canada recently experiencing its first case of the virus.

Tam advises all bird handlers and pet owners — not just commercial farmers — to wear personal protective equipment while handling animals.

She stressed that sick or dead birds and other animals need to be dealt with in a safe manner.

Tam is reminding people not to touch any dead foul or animals they come across and to contact the local health authority for disposal.
