Canadian countermeasures to U.S. tariffs to be announced today

The federal government is set to unveil the details of countermeasures and support for workers as Canada faces more tariffs from the United States.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said over the weekend that the dollar-for-dollar counter tariffs would kick in on Sept 8.

Carney suspended trade talks on Saturday due to American demands that he claimed were unreasonable.

The announcement comes after another tariff-hike threat from U.S. President Donald Trump, who says he’ll double tariffs on Canadian auto parts and steel, from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, starting Jan. 1.

Carney says he’s not surprised by the latest attack.

This morning on his Truth Social platform, Trump posted that the United States is thinking of renaming one of the Great Lakes.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to do much business with Ontario any longer,” the president wrote.

The latest jab comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

On Monday, the premier said that Trump could “kiss my ass” in response to the tariff threats.

Ford later reiterated the comment at a news conference in Hamilton, adding that Carney has his “full support.”
