Trudeau says U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused for 30 days

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says “proposed tariffs” between Canada and the United States will be paused for at least 30 days while the countries work together on the border.
Trudeau posted the statement on X following two phone calls Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” Trudeau writes in the statement.
This includes appointing a “fentanyl czar.”

Canada also plans to launch a joint strike force with the U.S. to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.
The late-afternoon announcement comes after Mexico struck a similar deal with Trump Monday morning.
Trump signed executive orders on Saturday that laid out a plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday.
