Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Sunday for the first time since the Russian invasion began.

Trudeau met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in-person in Kyiv. He reopened the Canadian embassy in the capital city, expressed unwavering support for the country and announced new weapons and equipment for Ukraine.

The Prime Minister also announced sanctions on 40 more Russian individuals and entities he says are complicit in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Trudeau is the latest in a line of western leaders traveling to Ukraine to support the country’s war effort against Russia. He visited the town of Irpin outside Kyiv as well, which was the focal point of fierce battles between Ukrainian and Russian troops before the Russians withdrew late in March.

Canada also announced it is providing $25 million to the U.N.’s World Food Programme to support food security and removing trade tariffs on all Ukrainian imports to Canada for next year.
