Trade tensions rise as Canada targets Chinese EVs with new tariffs
Canada is moving to match the United States with new tariffs on electric vehicles made in China in a bid to keep the cars from getting a significant foothold in the North American market.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau outlined the plan at a federal cabinet retreat in Halifax today, promising to increase import taxes on Chinese EVs to 106 per cent on Oct. 1.
Alongside the increase on cars, another will come into effect on Chinese steel and aluminum in an effort to protect domestic manufacturing.
