Hamilton police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with a stabbing at the Red Rose Motel in the city’s east end earlier this year.

On Jan. 2, officers responded to a stabbing at 553 Queenston Rd., where a woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. She is expected to recover.

The homicide unit identified a suspect and a Canada-wide warrant was issued when he could not be immediately found.

Police said on Monday, Joel Benjamin of Toronto was arrested in the Greater Toronto Area.

He has been charged with attempted murder and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. At the time of his arrest, detectives seized a quantity of suspected drugs, including a significant amount of possible fentanyl.

Benjamin was with a 36-year-old Toronto man, who has also been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime over $5,000. Police also seized approximately $30,000 in gold bars.

Benjamin was held in custody pending a bail hearing. The second accused was also held pending a judicial hearing.
