Tories propose changes to hazmat management

The Ontario government is being urged to improve its hazardous waste programs, many of which are operating at a deficit.

Kitchener PC MPP Michael Harris says he has a new approach that would see Ontario establish proper oversight of its recycling programs – and still allow companies to make money at it.

“Under this approach, government would simply set measurable and achievable waste diversion targets, establish environmental standards, and monitor outcomes. Stewards would then be free to determine how to achieve those targets, either on their own, or through a collaborative effort.”

Harris says it’s wrong for Ontario to make businesses foot the bill for the Liberal government’s failure to properly manage waste.
