The last round of Mohawk College employees slated to lose their jobs received their layoff notices Tuesday.

It happened at around 3:30 p.m., completing the Hamilton Mountain college’s attempt to curb spending.

This round is expected to impact an undisclosed number of faculty, after nearly 200 administrative and support positions were cut in the last couple of months.

Mohawk College announced the layoffs were coming in November, following a projected $50 million deficit in their 2025-26 budget.

Colleges across the country say the Canadian government’s decision to limit international student visas has negatively impacted the finances and funding of the educational institutions, particularly as they face growing deficits.

A rally will be held on Feb. 19 from noon to 1:30 p.m. to “support public post secondary education in Ontario” at the Fennell Campus in front of the EA building.
