Mohawk College eliminates 127 support staff positions

Nearly 125 support staff at Mohawk College have been let go as the post-secondary school grapples with a projected $50-million deficit.
Spokesperson Sean Coffey confirmed in an email Friday that a total of 102 full-time positions were eliminated, including 62 employees who were laid off on Tuesday, 26 from existing vacancies, 12 staff members who retired early, and two who took a voluntary exit package.
The layoffs represent approximately 20 per cent of the full-time support staff at the Hamilton Mountain institution. There were initially 479 employees.
Twenty-five part-time support staff positions were axed as well.

Mohawk College began the process of reducing the number of positions in response to a projected $50-million deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The college says this is a result of the federal government limiting the number of international students permitted in Canada over the next few years.
A number of Ontario’s colleges and universities have since reported that the cap is taking a toll on their institutions as they face growing deficits and layoffs.
