More layoffs to come for Mohawk College staff

More staff layoff and reductions announcements are expected today at Mohawk College in Hamilton.
Faculty and staff were sent a letter on Monday confirming that some support staff will be notified and impacted by the reductions Tuesday afternoon via email.
There are currently 479 support staff at the educational institution that specializes in applied arts and technology. The college did not release information regarding the number of employees affected.
Mohawk College began the process of reducing the number of positions in response to a projected $50 million deficit for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

In the staff memorandum president Paul Armstrong said the “process for notifying impacted faculty will be confirmed and communicated in the near future.”
The college said it recognizes that the changes are significant and asked for the staff’s patience and understanding.
“The next few weeks will be difficult for everyone, and especially for the impacted employees, their colleagues and teams,” Armstrong added.
In 2024 the federal government put an additional limit on the number of international students permitted in Canada over the next few years.
A number of Ontario’s colleges and universities have since reported that the cap is taking a toll on their institutions as they face growing deficits and layoffs.
