Teething jewellery

If you’ve got kids, you know how tough the teething phase can be, and you wonder when it will end.

Health and Lifestyle reporter Elise Copps joins us to talk about a smart solution dreamed up by a “mom-preneur” in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Babies love to put things in their mouths. And when they’re teething, the easiest thing to grab is often mom’s jewellery. That’s why lots of moms decide to go jewellery free. But, not anymore, thanks to a growing local business.

Sarah Leplae’s son Cian is a great little helper. But a year and a half ago, he was in the throes of teething — grabbing at his mom’s jewellery and putting it in his mouth.

Sarah: “I realized I wasn’t the only one having this problem. It was a challenge for other moms. So a line of jewellery that moms could wear and feel comfortable if their babies were to grab and chew it.”

‘Chic Mamma’s Teething Jewellery‘ is Leplae’s solution. Unlike conventional accessories, it’s baby safe and soothing: “It actually would feel quite nice for the baby because of that resistance, and for the necklace itself it doesn’t leave any dents or marks in the necklace.”

The whole line is made of food grade silicone — like you see in some bottle nipples and cookware. It doesn’t contain any paint or small parts that could break off in baby’s mouth.

Sarah: “It’s non-toxic, so it doesn’t contain any BPA or PVC or lead or cadmium. And that’s what makes it safe for them to put in their mouths.”

This bracelet even doubles as a teething toy. Because it doesn’t have any beads, you can take it right off your wrist and hand it over to baby.

Leplae’s business has grown along with Cian. And she’s now branching out into nursing covers and kids accessories.

As a busy “mom-preneur”, she knows how much difference peace of mind makes: “I was really just looking to solve this problem in a fun fashionable way that’s also safe for the baby.”

Leplae just had a second baby — so look for some new products that will soon be in the testing phase.
