Teens rationed food while lost in Algonquin Park: OPP

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says two teenage girls did everything right when they realized they were lost in Algonquin Provincial Park last week.

The 16-year-olds were last seen Thursday and got lost after leaving the trail they were hiking.

They were supposed to meet up with the rest of their camping group on Friday but did not arrive.

More than 100 volunteers and police officers searched the area throughout the weekend.

An OPP helicopter and a floatplane from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests were also used to search for the girls from above the dense forest canopy.

The teens were found Monday morning by an OPP canine unit and were reunited with their families.

Police say the girls took the right steps when they realized they were lost by staying put rather than trying to find their way back. They say that’s important because often, people end up wandering even farther away rather than retracing their steps.

The teens rationed what little food and water they had while they were alone in the woods for three days.
