More than 800 public elementary school teachers and education professionals have gathered at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle Hotel for their annual general meeting. And with the union in a legal strike position, people are listening closely to what its president has to say.

The goal of the 3-day meeting is to set policies and directions for the coming year, including an overview of collective bargaining.

The union has been in a legal strike position since May 10th, at which time it began a work-to-rule campaign. The union points to wages, class size, hiring practices and teacher preparation time as stumbling blocks in the negotiations with the province.

At today’s meeting, federal politics also became a focus of Union President Sam Hammond’s speech. With the fall election just around the corner, he had some harsh words for the Conservative government.
