We’re just 3 weeks away from the first day of school and parents are still wondering whether they’ll have to scramble for alternate child care arrangements, in the event of a teacher’s strike.
Some of the unions haven’t been at the bargaining table in months, as negotiations seemed to take a summer vacation from the dispute. Today however, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne sounded an optimistic note, as she attended a summer camp program for at-risk youth in Brampton.
The program involves more than 200 vulnerable youths in the neighbourhood, keeping them active and engaged through the summer months while they are not in school. The Premier brought a cheque for $46 000 to help fund the program.
She said she expected a “tough few weeks of bargaining”, before Ontario’s 115 000 teachers are scheduled to return to the classroom September 8th.
