Thursday marks the six-year anniversary of the shooting death of Hamilton-native Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.

Cirillo, 24, was serving as a ceremonial Honour Guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa when Michael Zehaf Bibeau opened fire on Oct. 22, 2014.

Bibeau then stormed Parliament Hill’s Centre Block, injuring a guard.

He was shot and killed by sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers.

Cirillo’s death was marked across the country and especially in Hamilton.

Thousands of people filled the streets for a funeral procession in the days following his death.

Tributes have been coming in across the country on the anniversary.

The Canadian Heroes Foundation is holding an event today at the grave.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement on the anniversary:

“On this solemn anniversary, I join Canadians to remember and pay tribute to Corporal Cirillo and to Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was killed two days earlier in a separate attack in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. We offer our deepest sympathy to their families and friends.”
