SIU clears Halton police in death of man in Burlington murder-suicide

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared Halton police officers of responsibility for the death of a Burlington man back in June.

On June 3, Halton police were called to a Burlington home after receiving a call that suggested a man had killed someone and was threatening a woman. The SIU have determined the people heard speaking on the call to be a mother and son.

The SIU says when officers arrived, the mother let them into the home and directed police upstairs where she said her son was.

The officers directed the man to leave the ensuite bathroom he was hiding in and drop the knife.

When the man “stumbled out,” of the bathroom into the connected master bedroom, he was met with an officer’s taser which caused him to fall to the ground.

Police then arrested him and discovered he was bleeding profusely from a self-inflicted laceration across his neck.

They began performing first-aid on the man before paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead.

The SIU – which acts as a police watchdog – has said it does not find that Halton police committed a criminal offence in the death of the man.
