Families from Tapleytown Elementary School learned on Tuesday that the Ministry of Education will not be moving forward with the new school expected to be built and located at 399 First Rd. W in Stoney Creek.

A letter sent to families by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board says an investigation from their board of trustees carefully investigated the changing conditions related to the activity at the Taro industrial dump and approved the build almost a year ago, in October 2024.

The GFL-owned facility has received complaints for its smell causing residents to be concerned for a school in the area.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education instructed the school board to cease progress on the new school.

The board says it is committed to “sourcing a new property for this school, which will service the same geographical area.”

More details can be found on the school board’s website.
