The great lakes surveillance program has monitored water quality of the great lakes for over 40 years.

The Canadian coast guard ship called Limnos embarks on cruises of the lakes to conduct scientific research for Environment Canada. The ship has 24 hour sampling capacity, sleeping cabins and a kitchen.

The crew runs one to two week cruises at a time.

Bob Rowsell told CHCH News “All research is important for ongoing monitoring in the lake and also the monitoring in surveillance is also important too because it gives us a long term picture of what’s going on in the great lakes.”

“We’ve been collecting data now since the late 60’s early 70’s and we’re able to see changes in the lake over the time in the lakes since we’ve started to monitor.”

The great lakes surveillance program runs up to 28 cruises a year.
