Two motorcyclists are dead following separate collisions in Hamilton on Friday, serving as a grim reminder of the risks on the road as warmer weather arrives.

The first crash occurred just before 1 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Concession 5 West and Kirkwall Road in Flamborough. Police say a pickup truck and a motorcycle collided; the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the truck was uninjured.

The second fatal incident happened just after 8 p.m. on the east mountain. A Harley Davidson motorcycle struck a Toyota RAV4 within the intersection of Pritchard Road and Harlowe Road. The male rider was transported to hospital where he later died.

Local riders say the news is a tragic start to the season.

“It’s disappointing, it’s sad,” said Aaron, a local motorcyclist. “It’s an amazing sport and to hear that two people died, it puts a bad name to the sport.”

Patrick, who works at Sturgess Cycle in Hamilton, said that while the news is tragic, it is unfortunately predictable.

“Unfortunately, no surprise; it is kind of par for the course,” Patrick said. “Every year there is an uptick in motorcycle accidents at the beginning and end of the year.”

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Ed Sanchuk warned that the spring weather requires a shift in driver awareness.

“The warmer weather is upon us and with warmer weather brings motorcycle enthusiasts,” Sanchuk said. “A reminder to the general public and motoring public: always make sure you check your blind spots.”

Sanchuk emphasized that extra caution at intersections is vital. “Make sure you check twice before proceeding because it will save a life. If you have to, take three or four extra seconds to check.”

Safety experts also urged riders to ensure their equipment is ready for the road after a winter in storage. Patrick advised bikers to check tire pressures and ride with the assumption that they are invisible to other motorists.

“Ride with a lot more awareness. Understand that people are not going to see you, they are not ready for bikes yet,” Patrick said.

Aaron added that riders should never compromise on safety equipment. “Be aware, be safe, proper gear. Don’t cheap out, buy good gear. Wear it all the time. The one time you don’t wear it usually will be when something bad happens. And just stay off your phones.”

For those behind the wheel of a car, Aaron’s message was simple: “Keep an eye out, go slow, use your blinkers and be aware that there’s going to be an uptick very soon and a lot of  people on the road on bikes.”

Hamilton police are asking anyone who witnessed either collision or who may have dashcam footage from the areas to contact investigators.
