Queen Elizabeth the Second is set to become the longest reigning monarch in Britain, and what a reign it’s been. Brittany Gogo has more on this historic milestone.
It has been 63 years since Queen Elizabeth the Second ascended to the throne. It was 1953, and she was 25 years old. Her rule has spanned 12 British prime ministers, and six decades of history. She has also seen dramatic changes in society.
She’s the most traveled monarch in history, having visited over 116 counties. She made her third visit to Hamilton in 2002, to present the new flag to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, as their honorary Colonel in Chief.
Already Britain’s longest lived monarch, on Wednesday she will reach another milestone when she becomes longest reigning monarch, breaking the record set by her great great grandmother Queen Victoria.
As the Queen approaches her 90th birthday she hasn’t given any indication that she will step down.
