Public safety concerns grow in wake of CN train derailment in northern Ontario

Firefighters are working to control a fire near Gogama in northern Ontario.
This comes after a Canadian National Railway train derailed early Saturday morning.
While no injuries have been reported, the recent derailment in Gogama has brought the issue of public safety to the forefront.
35 CN rail cars carrying crude oil from Alberta went off the tracks.
Five of which are now in the Makami River, a major water system for area residents.
This is the fourth CN rail derailment this year and it has some local residents worried about whether this area is prepared for such a disaster.
In 1979 a Canadian Pacific freight train carrying poisonous chemicals from Windsor derailed in Mississauga.
More than 200,000 thousand people were forced out of their homes.
Two years ago, the town of Lac-Mégantic in Quebec was devastated after a freight train carrying crude oil derailed.
42 people were killed and the town’s core completely destroyed.
One Hamilton city councillor, Sam Merulla, is calling on stricter measures so incidences like Lac-Mégantic and Gogama don’t happen in Hamilton.
