An environmental assessment has found the presence of silica and lead on the Barton and Tiffany lands in Hamilton.

A report released by the City of Hamilton says the silica – or sand – is assumed to be present in asphalt, levelling compounds, concrete and mortar.

The report also says there was lead located in paint on metal posts.

A communications update from the city says there are measures outlined in the report that are recommended to protect workers from exposure to the substances.

Construction on the micro-shelter project at the lands officially started Monday, with the goal of finishing by Dec. 20.
