Port Colborne to accelerate construction of 128 homes

The City of Port Colborne announced Tuesday that it would be accelerating the construction of 128 homes over the next three years.

Vance Badawey, MP for Niagara Centre, said the 128 homes are part of a $4.3 million agreement with the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF).

“To solve the housing crisis, we need to build more homes that Canadians can afford – faster,” Badawey said in a statement.

“Through the Housing Accelerator Fund, we’re working with the city to cut red tape, speeding up permits and increasing density.”

Launched in 2023, the HAF is a $4.4 billion initiative from the federal government to support the creation of more housing units across the country.

“This funding is integral in supporting the City of Port Colborne’s strategic plan to increase housing options,” William Steele, Mayor of Port Colborne said.

“It will help to move forward much-needed housing projects and partnerships while also contributing to an increase in the overall housing supply.”

In order to receive support from HAF, Port Colborne needed to come up with an action plan for housing in the region.

City officials say the plan includes updating zoning bylaws to encourage the development of more medium- and high-density projects.

The city also plans to partner with developers in order to expand the region’s affordable housing supply.
