OPP charge 2 people in series of suspicious Norfolk County fires

Ontario Provincial Police believe they have caught two men responsible for a series of suspicious fires set around Norfolk County in the past three months.

Emergency crews were called to the latest fire around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at a vacant barn on Lynn Valley Road, east of Highway 6 in Haldimand County.

About 15 minutes later, officers stopped a pick-up truck on Concession 12 Townsend in Norfolk County, which matched the description of a truck spotted at a fire in November.

Police arrested 30-year-old Matthew Smith and 43-year-old Chad Reimer, who are both from Norfolk County.

They each face 11 counts of arson – damage to property. Smith is also charged with failing to comply with a probation order, while Reimer also faces a charge for driving while impaired.

Sunday night’s blaze is the 14th suspicious fire being investigated by Norfolk County OPP since November, including numerous barns, abandoned houses and a Shell gas station with a home attached to it.

Four of the fires were set just this past week. No one was injured in any of the blazes.

Police had recently set up a task force to deal with the slew of suspicious incidents.
