Niagara police conducting RIDE spot checks Saturday night in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland stopped nearly 300 drivers.

Officers say they required 38 drivers to provide a sample for breathalyzer tests.

They say one driver was arrested after failing to provide a breath sample on demand.

Another driver who did provide a breath sample earlier Saturday evening was stopped again hours later for speeding and driving without headlights on.

Police say it was “apparent” that the driver had consumed more alcohol since their first interaction as they displayed “indicators of impairment.”

The driver was arrested for impaired driving.

Niagara police say impaired driving continues to be the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.
