OPP Canada Day safety blitz

The OPP launched their annual Canada Day safety weekend blitz and they have one main safety concern for motorists, aggressive driving.
“Its the number one killer right now on OPP roads across the province. We’ve had 21 people die already this year. It’s been the leading cause for many years already.” Sgt Kerry Schmidt.
Last year 8 people lost their lives on OPP patrolled roads over Canada day weekend. Schmidt says when traffic is heavy, driving behaviours change.
“Following too close, unnecessary or unsafe lane changes, tailgating, all these issues can lead to other problems.”
Aggressive driving is number one of the four leading causes of death on the highways, along with distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt.
“Driving is something we all love to do but we hate it when were stuck in traffic and congestion. We need to plan ahead, realize and understand there’s going to be a lot of people doing exactly what you want to do yourself.”
If you are heading onto the roadways this weekend a message from OPP, you will get there when you get there.
