The David Suzuki Foundation has released a study showing the economic value of the carbon storing ability of the Ontario greenbelt.

It estimates the greenbelt keeps 172 million tonnes of greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere, and values this carbon storehouse at $2.4 billion.

That amount of CO2 is equivalent to the greenhouse emissions released from Ontario’s entire transportation, industrial, building and electricity sectors.

The Ontario greenbelt is the world’s largest urban greenbelt.
