The Oakville company, Samuel, Son & Co., owner of Nelson Steel, has been fined $125,000 following a workplace injury that happened just over three years ago at a Stoney Creek plant.

According to a release from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the initial incident happened on Nov. 8, 2023 at Samuel Nelson Technology on Glover Road in Stoney Creek.

The release says that a worker was using a turnstile and down-ender table with electronic controls when another worker noticed that one of the coils was incorrectly secured.

The worker entered the area between the two pieces of machinery to try and repair the error.

During the attempted repair, the machine was activated, causing one of the coils to come off and fall to the ground, seriously injuring the worker making the repair.

The ministry determined that the company had failed to take the correct safety measures that may have prevented the injury.

The company pleaded guilty to the charge in front of the Ontario Court of Justice in Hamilton and was convicted on Nov. 24, 2025.

It was fined $125,000 and made to pay a 25 per cent surcharge which will go to a special provincial fund to assist victims of crime.
