Niagara police arrest male suspect in Fort Erie shooting

Niagara police have arrested a man in connection to a Fort Erie shooting, which took place in late July.

On Wednesday, 28-year-old Samuel Sawyer, of Fort Erie, was arrested by the Six Nations police.

Officers say Sawyer remains in custody and was transported to the Niagara Region to attend a bail hearing.

The bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.

On July 29 at around 1:30 a.m., police were called to an address on Niagara Boulevard between Bertie Street and Murray Street in Fort Erie, for a report that someone had been shot.

Officers arrived on scene to find a 27-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body.

Emergency services treated the victim and transported him to an out-of-region hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Investigators say initial information was obtained indicating that an altercation had taken place between the victim and the suspect, outside of a residence on Niagara Boulevard.

Detectives say the incident escalated to the point at which the suspect discharged a firearm at the victim.

Officers say Sawyer was identified as the suspect and was wanted for several offences including discharging a firearm with the intent to wound and aggravated assault.
