Updated Two people are dead after an early morning crash in St Catharines.

A 20 year old man died, and four people were taken to hospital. One of those people – the driver of an Air Liquide truck – has died.

It all began around 4 this morning when two vehicles headed Niagara-bound were involved in a minor collision. But then a tractor trailer slammed into one of those vehicles, hit a cement median and dumped its cargo on the highway.

The Niagara-bound lanes of the QEW between the 406 and Seventh Street reopened mid-afternoon.

Crews are now trying to clean up the highway and could be on scene until midnight. The Toronto-bound lanes are expected to be closed for hours yet as crews need to remove the tanker truck, clean up spilled diesel and re-pave the road before those lanes can re-open.
