Monty, a five-year-old hound mix, spent 450 days at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton, but has finally found his forever home.
One of the hardest parts of working at a shelter is seeing animals continue to get overlooked, like Monty.
“It’s very sad, it’s heartbreaking. It’s one of the sad points of working here. We see a lot of happy stories and success stories. But of course, it’s sad as well seeing an animal stay here day in and day out with no real prospects,” said Lisa De Sousa, customer care manager at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton.
Monty had been at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton for 450 days after spending a year in a different shelter.
“It sucks because you’re like, when is it going to be their turn? He has all amazing qualities. All of the dogs do but I guess it kind of just depends on what people are looking for,” said Jenna Baker, animal care attendant.
But the humane society’s social media team posted a video about Monty and it went viral with more than 500,000 views. One of those viewers jumped at the chance to adopt him – and Monty went to his new home this week.
“It’s really just an amazing time for everyone at the shelter. It brings us all together, it reinforces why we do what we do,” said Sousa.
“It is bitter sweet, especially a dog that has been here for so long like Monty. You bond with them, you get to know them. I consider the dogs all my friends so it is bittersweet seeing his empty kennel, but the purpose of a shelter is a temporary stay until they find their true people,” said Baker.

Up next is Rudy – an eight-year-old hound mix who is pretty passionate about fetch.
“Rudy is our perfect little angel boy. He has been with us for 299 days, so on the cusp of 300 days with him right now. He was actually left at our shelter in a plastic crate with a carrier, no owner in sight,” said Sousa.
While Rudy is loving, adorable and playful, he does have some health issues that a new family would have to monitor.
“He has allergies. So he’s on medication for allergies, he’s on a diet to help manage his allergies. When he came to us he did experience some seizures, so he’s on some medication to prevent those. We haven’t seen him have a seizure since going on those meds, so that’s been great,” said Sousa.
And he doesn’t let his medical history slow him down.
“Rudy is an all-around great guy. He loves to play fetch. He will play fetch from dawn to nighttime,” said Baker.
Rudy is part of the Golden Years adoption program, which means there isn’t an adoption fee.
