Metrolinx says an investigation will begin after a boy was hit and killed by a train on the Lakeshore West GO train line in Mississauga Wednesday afternoon.
In an unimaginable tragedy, police say a 13-year-old boy was hit at around 3 p.m.
Just before the incident, he was with another young child, riding around on a motorized scooter.
Officers believe the boy went around the barrier before he was struck.
Initial investigation suggests that the traffic signals were functioning at the time and the crossing arms were down.
“It would be remiss of me not to remind motorists in the area, especially during this time of March Break, there’s a lot more kids out and about — be mindful of your surroundings,” said Peel police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena. “I certainly don’t want to pass on any blame towards the young man. When I was his age, I was out on a dirt bike myself, and you should be able to go out there and have fun, but this is a time, unfortunately, to remind our kids that when they’re on those bikes to really mind the crossings, particularly at railway crossings.”
Multiple first responders were at the train crossing near Alexandra Avenue and Fourth Street, around a five minute drive from Long Branch GO station.
The train line faced significant delays following the incident, with service stopped between Long Branch GO station and Port Credit GO stations for the investigation.
Metrolinx released a statement which said, “while the details of the incident are still under investigation by Peel Regional Police, this is an important and sobering reminder of the importance of rail safety and how dangerous trains are. With more trains and more people moving across our region every day, staying aware at rail crossings is essential.”
Metrolinx added that a full investigation will be done, as they always do with incidents as serious as this.
There doesn’t seem to be any delays on the Lakeshore West line Thursday morning, according to the Metrolinx official website.
