Medicinal herbs

The Our Sustenance program in Ohsweken grows a wide variety of medicinal plants and herbs in its greenhouse. It also teaches people how to grow their own at home and turn them into natural remedies.
Inside the ‘Our Sustenance’ greenhouse in Ohsweken are rows on rows of fragrant herbs. Oregano, for example, can be infused into an oil that some believe is helpful in treating pain and sinus problems. To make it chop and press oregano leaves, combine them in a jar with equal parts oil and place it in boiling water for 10 minutes. Then leave it in the sun for 2 weeks, and strain.
Many herbs with medicinal uses are easy to grow at home. Peppermint is believed to help with digestion and both chamomile flowers and catnip have a reputation for calming the mind and aiding sleep.
‘Our Sustenance’ coordinator Adrianne Lickers uses them in soothing baths, “when you add to it some herbs and that amazing smell and the great feeling that comes with it, you can’t help but feel good about it.”
Before trying any at home herbal remedies consult with your health care provider. Some plants shouldn’t be used by children and pregnant women or people taking certain medications.
