Massive fire in Hamilton’s east end destroys roof, floors of home

Multiple firefighters battled a massive house fire overnight Thursday in Hamilton’s east end, which destroyed the roof and spread to a neighbouring home.

Fire crews say they received reports that a fire broke out just before 12:30 a.m. at a home on Country Club Drive near Capilano and Alto Drives.

The roof of the building was completely destroyed from the blaze, with both the roof and the floors having collapsed.

The flames reportedly got so intense that it spread to the neighbouring house at one point during the morning.

Initially, firefighters believed that there may have been two people inside the burning building, and made every effort to get inside but were met with heavy flames and had to get out.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

A release from the Hamilton Fire Department says the fire had extended into the attic of the neighbouring house.

The aerial firefighting unit and other defensive operations were used to get as much water on the flames as possible.

The report reads that the neighbouring house saw significant damage to the second floor and the attic area.

Several firefighting units were called in across the city to deal with the fire.

Cunliffe also said there was a gas line that was severed at the side of the house, which needed additional attention.

The report from the fire department says three firefighters involved were sent to hospital for heat-related injuries, and another firefighter who slipped on ice during the fire and was also sent to hospital.

The department says each firefighter has been released from hospital.

Hamilton Fire estimates that damages to both homes in the neighbourhood are at around $2 million.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to examine the fire.

This is a developing news story, more to come.
