Man arrested, another in hospital after downtown St. Catharines stabbing

Niagara police say a man has been arrested and another brought to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a stabbing downtown St. Catharines in the early hours of Tuesday.

Officers say they were called to the area of Church and William streets at around 12:25 a.m. for reports of a stabbing.

According to police, a 23-year-old man was found with one stab wound, brought to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators set up a perimeter around the scene and with the help of police dogs, located and arrested the man they believe to be responsible for the stabbing.

David Penner, 57, of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Police say he has been held in custody before his bail hearing.

Authorities are asking anyone in the area, who may have surveillance or dashcam footage from between midnight and 1 a.m. on Tuesday to contact them at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009610.
