Riders who don’t pay for GO Transit and Union Pearson Express trips will face higher fines starting Sept. 8.

The penalties for fare evasion will increase gradually, with repeat offenders facing steeper fines.

To avoid any issues, tap your Presto or Interac debit card at the beginning and end of your GO Transit train or bus trip, or UP Express airport rail link service.

According to a report published in June, the higher fines are expected to generate $6 to $10 million for Metrolinx.

“Fare evasion affects everyone. Increasing fines helps protect a transit system that’s reliable and sustainable for all riders,” says the government transportation agency.
