Local event marks Int’l Women’s Day

Women from across the Halton region gathered in Burlington today to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Sheila Copps, one of canada’s most prominent female politicians, highlighted the recent progress women have made in politics. “This has been a great year for Canadian women in politics. For the first time in the history of Canada, five of our 10 Premiers are women.”

Carm Bozzo of Halton Women’s Place: “Even though we’re in 2013, there’s still a lot we need to do in terms of reaching gender equality, and in our case in particular, educating people about women abuse and the fact that in our community it’s still very prevalent.”

All proceeds from today’s luncheon are going to the public education program at Halton Women’s Place, a shelter and crisis centre for abused women.
