While COVID-19 has made it difficult for Grimsby choir group, Womenchant to sing in person they knew they had to get together for a special performance for one of their own, Jill Darke who was diagnosed with cancer last fall.

Darke has been singing with Womenchant since 2007 after her partner died from cancer. Darke is now receiving palliative care from home, so Womenchant decided to bring the choir to her. Singing in her driveway so that she can listen and watch through her window. Their director Laura Thomas says they just wanted to break the isolation a little bit.

Member of Womenchant Sandra Lambie says, “she’s a courageous, courageous woman, I don’t know how she does it but she’s got a lot of hope, and just like the song we sang today “hope is.” Jill is the epitome of what hope is. We want to stand there with her and get through this with her.”

Darke says the last time she performed with them was in 2020, since then this is the first time she’s seeing them in person. She was excited to see them but she also got a chance to do something she’s been waiting for, sing together.
