Local animal shelters at capacity with increase of people surrendering pets

Animal shelters in our region have been overwhelmed with an influx of surrendered pets, as they struggle to find enough homes for them.
The Hamilton-Burlington SPCA says over 60 animals at the shelter are looking for their forever homes. “Those animals have been vaccinated, they’ve been de-wormed, they’re microchipped, neutered, and ready to go,” Karen Reichheld of the HBSPCA said.
The number of pets coming in exceeds the number going out. Reichheld says the HBSPCA is full and is still getting multiple requests for surrenders throughout the day.
Kevin Strooband from the Lincoln Humane Society believes the return to normalcy after the pandemic plays a role. “I’d almost call this the roaring 20’s. People are back out there doing things, having fun and they aren’t focussing on adopting a pet,” Strooband said.
Strooband wants to encourage the public to remember the joy these little friends can bring, “don’t forget about the pets. If you’re thinking about getting one, go out and do it.”
It is important that families interested do their homework in preparation. “If you don’t have a pet and have never had one, get a vet. Talk to a vet, and talk to the ones in your area,” Strooband said.
Both shelters CHCH News spoke with say the adoption process is straightforward and fairly quick.
