Lightning strikes Ribfest

At least 17 people were taken to hospital after lightning struck a tent at the Whitby Ribfest.

The strike happened shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday, as people were inside one of the main dining tents.

Organizers closed the event shortly after. They say they the storm rose up suddenly, and that they executed their emergency plan accordingly.

None of the injuries sustained are considered life threatening.
