Karate instructors charged with sexual assault

35-year-old Shannon Kaye of Welland and 39-year-old Michael Ryan Kowtaluk of Hamilton are facing sexual assault related charges for an alleged incident at a karate tournament 6 years ago. Kaye surrendered to police last week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police say a woman came forward to police last month. She was 16 at the time of the alleged attack and told police she had been sexually assaulted by two of her karate instructors. The woman was competing in a tournament in the Lindsay area, which is about 40 kilometres near Peterborough.

CHCH reached out to the karate club, but has not receive a response yet.

Kaye was also a member of the Canadian National Shintani Wado Kai karate team. It’s not clear if Kowtaluk was teaching karate before being arrested.

The two accused are expected to appear in a Lindsay court house on May 19th.
