Jays fans confident as Toronto faces Yankees in first-ever postseason matchup

It’s the first time the Toronto Blue Jays have met the New York Yankees in the post season.

The fact that Bo Bichette and Max Scherzer are not on tonight’s roster has some Jays fans up in arms.

CHCH News caught up with fans leaving for the game from Appleby GO Station in Burlington.

The other point fans are making is the Jays are coming off five days’ rest and the Yankees will be too beat up to rotate their starting pitchers after their series against the Boston Red Sox.

At the end of the day, will the Jays come out on top tonight? 99 per cent said yes.

Jays fans were arriving at the Appleby GO Station today full of opinions on today’s American League Division Series against the Yankees.

“We got Gausman so hopefully he can just pitch a complete game and that would be awesome. But yeah, Scherzer not being in the lineup is obviously a bit of a blow. Bassitt not being available is also a blow. Bichette? Oh my gosh,” said fan Jennifer Dowd.

“I think it’s going to be a tough series against the Yankees. Yeah, it’s going to be tough, tough, tough because the Yankees aren’t a push over. And the Jays are ready for this, they are built for this,” said another fan, Gilles Bourque.

“I have faith in the Jays just because we had a pretty good regular season against them. Everything changes in the playoffs right? And they’ve had their intra-squad games and Bo Bichette is not in the lineup. But with Kirk, George Springer and Vladdy I think we can pull through,” said fan Carlos Ortega.

“We’re going to be more energetic, more running the bases, test their defence a little bit,” said fan Caden.

“I think the Jays are going to win. I think they have had enough time to rest and get prepared while the Yankees are coming off of a grueling three game series beating out the Red Sox. With that, they are not going to be starting their primary pitchers. They are going to be starting with their fourth line/bullpen, where the Jays will start with their primary Gausman,” said fan Owen Radford.

Canadian Press reporter Greg Strong thinks this “rust versus rest” debate is interesting.

“The Yankees come in, they’re unable to reset their starters the way the Blue Jays did. But the Blue Jays have had five days off which is great for resting those aches and pains. But at the same time, is it good for a starter to go eight, nine days without getting a start? Well, there’s two points of view on that,” said Strong.
