Humboldt Broncos driver denied bid to remain in Canada

A federal judge has dismissed the bid of the truck driver who caused the fatal 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan to remain in Canada.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu has been fighting deportation back to India since he was sentenced to eight years for the crash that killed 16 people and left 13 others injured.

Back in September, the judge rejected a request for a second review of the case, while still giving Sidhu the option to apply for permanent resident status on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

He was conditional granted day parole in 2022 pending a decision on the bid to remain in Canada.

Sidhu went through a stop sign at a rural Saskatchewan intersection and drove into the path of the junior hockey team’s bus as it was on its way to a playoff game.

The driver, who has been serving his sentence at a prison in Bowden, Alberta, asked to be released pending possible deportation.

The city of Humboldt built a tribute centre to honour the victims of the tragedy four years later.

The 35-million-dollar project also includes an arena, a fitness and physiotherapy area, and a permanent memorial at the site of the crash.
